Glen Cunningham Tenor

Recipient of Independent Opera Voice Scholarship 2019

Scottish tenor Glen Cunningham is currently studying the Royal College of Music’s Opera Studio under the tutelage of Russell Smythe. He previously completed a one-year Masters at the RCM and a Bachelor of Music degree with First class honours at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, under the tutelage of Amand Hekkers & Patricia Hay.

Glen was recently awarded the Wiseman Prize by Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarships Trust, he won the Joan Chissell Schumann Competition at the Royal College of Music in March 2018, and in 2016 he won the Hugh S Roberton Prize for Scottish Singing at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is regularly found performing in concert with venue highlights such as the Glasgow City Halls, accompanied by the Scottish Opera Orchestra. Glen also made his international debut in Rotterdam at the De Doelen in January 2017 singing the role of Le Remendado in a concert performance of Bizet’s Carmen. He has also performed in public masterclasses with Sir Thomas Allen and Edith Wiens.

Operatic experience includes: cover of Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Garsington Opera) Summer 2019; the title role in Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe and Basilio in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro directed by Sir Thomas Allen (Royal College of Music); La Couf and Le Fils in Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias (Les Azuriales Opera Young Artists Programme); cover of Ferrando in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte (Opera Holland Park); and Youngest Son in Judith Weir’s The Vanishing Bridegroom (British Youth Opera).

Glen is a recipient of an Independent Opera Voice Scholarship and Fellowship. He is generously supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, The Robertson Trust and Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarships Trust. Glen is also a Basil Coleman Opera Scholar supported by the Charles Jacob Scholarship, a Josephine Baker Trust Scholar and a Help Musicians UK Sybil Tutton Award holder.
